Jednota Flats

For years residents of the Jednota Flats community in Lower Swatara Township have dealt with flooding issues whenever there are heavy rains.  The causes of the flooding in this area are complex and are costly to remedy.

On Wednesday, July 21, 2010, The Middletown Press and Journal published an article that entitled HIA, ‘not a good neighbor.'  Unfortunately the article did not disclose the reasons why the The Airport Authority running HIA, has delayed cleaning out sedimentation in a retention pond located on its property along Route 230.   The reason the project will not be completed in 2010 is that the sediment removal will have an insignificant reduction in upstream flooding and has had no significant impact on upstream flooding conditions in Jednota Flats.

At this time, spending potentially up to $25,000 on a project that will have absolutely no impact on upstream flooding is not responsible.  HIA and the Airport Authority continue to express our willingness to work in cooperation with Lower Swatara Township, PennDOT (and whomever else is willing to participate) to commit the resources necessary to permanently resolve this problem.
