HIA Traffic Down in May, up year-to-date

The Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority (SARAA) reported today that 113,484 passengers flew into and out of Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) during May 2011.  Traffic decreased 4.8 percent compared to last May, but is up 3.4 percent year to date. May’s 78.2 percent load factor (percentage of seats sold) is the highest of the year.  A total of 517,232 passengers used Harrisburg International Airport between January 1st and May 31st in 2011.

“We are pleased to see the strong load factor number for the month of May,” said Fred Sembach, SARAA board member, “as it is a good indicator of regional demand for air travel.  US Airways continues to recapture passenger traffic and we are excited about AirTran’s expanded nonstop service to Orlando between now and Labor Day.  Unfortunately the fact that airfares across the country are creeping up as the costs of fuel increases means that HIA may continue to see a decrease in total traffic over the summer.  We encourage you to consider the total costs of your travel as your booking your summer trips.  Take into consideration, not only cost of airfare, but your time on the road, parking fees, fuel and wear and tear on your personal vehicle.”

“With the technology changes that have taken place over the past few years, investing in a new parking revenue control system will allow us to operate a more efficient parking operation while providing some additional options for our most frequent customers in the future,” said Marshall Stevens, deputy executive director.

“The HIA terminal building complex is constantly being complimented for its cleanliness—especially our restrooms.  This is a direct result of the ABM staff which has done an excellent job since the complex opened in 2004.  We look forward to continuing our relationship with them for the next three years,” said Stevens.

The next SARAA Board meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 24th, 2010 at 8:00 am at the Middlesex Township Municipal Office, 350 North Middlesex Road, Carlisle.
